Muyil (or Chunyaxché) is one of the 22 pre-hispanic settlements inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere and is situated approximately 15 kilometers south of Tulum Pueblo on Highway 307.
Muyil was one of the earliest and longest inhabited ancient Maya port cities on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, and artifacts found here date back from as early as 350 BC. The ruins of Muyil are an example of Peten architecture with steep-walled pyramids like those at Tikal in Guatemala.
Muyil had strong ties to Coba, which is located approximately 45 kilometers northeast. The cost to enter the ruins is about $4 USD. This small site is well worth the price as the area is lightly visited. The walking paths have recently been improved and more structures have been reconstructed. Entrance guides are not available here.
