Local Tips

Mexico is calling. Whether you're visiting for a beach getaway, exploring ancient ruins, or savoring the cuisine, it all starts with smooth entry and exit from the country. Here’s a clear and informative guide on passport rules, customs procedures, and what you need to know before you go.

Passport Regulations: Who Needs What?

Before packing your bags, ensure your passport meets Mexico’s entry requirements.

North American Travelers (U.S. & Canada)

  • Your passport must be valid at the time of entry, though at least six months of validity is recommended.
  • No visa is required for stays under 180 days for tourism, but you may need to complete an FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple), also known as the tourist card.
  • Note: Travelers flying to Cancún, Mexico City, and Los Cabos do not need to fill out an FMM; their information is recorded digitally upon arrival.
  • If required, you can obtain the FMM online via the National Institute of Migration (INM).

European Travelers

  • Citizens of most European Union countries, the U.K., and the Schengen area do not need a visa for visits up to 180 days.
  • Like North American travelers, they may need to complete an FMM.
  • Mexico requires your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. More details can be found at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

South American Travelers

  • Travelers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Peru can enter visa-free for up to 180 days.
  • Venezuelan and other South American travelers may require a visa. Check with your local Mexican Consulate before planning your trip.

African & Asian Travelers

  • A visa may be required depending on your country of origin.
  • If you hold a valid U.S., Canadian, Schengen, or Japanese visa, you may not need a separate visa to enter Mexico.
  • Check your specific requirements on the National Immigration Institute (INM).

Customs: What to Expect by Land, Air, or Sea

Arriving by Air

  • After landing, you will go through immigration, where your passport will be stamped and, if required, your FMM checked.
  • Customs procedures: Most airports use the “red light/green light” system:
    • Green light: You proceed without inspection.
    • Red light: Quick baggage check.
  • Official customs regulations: Visit the Tax Administration Service (SAT).

Digital FMM Implementation

Since 2022, Mexico has eliminated the need for air travelers to fill out a paper FMM at certain airports. Instead, the immigration process is now digitized, making entry faster.

Airports Where FMM is Not Required:

  • Cancún International Airport (CUN)
  • Mexico City International Airport (MEX)
  • Los Cabos International Airport (SJD)

For more details, visit the Instituto Nacional de Migración.

Arriving by Land

  • If driving in from the U.S., expect immigration and customs checkpoints at the border.
  • If staying within the border zone (20 km from the border) for fewer than seven days, an FMM is not required.
  • For longer stays or travel beyond the border zone, an FMM permit is required and can be obtained at the border station.
  • More details at the Mexican Border Authority.

Arriving by Sea

  • If arriving by cruise ship or private boat, immigration clearance takes place at the first port of entry.
  • Customs inspections follow similar procedures as air travel.
  • For maritime entry information, visit Mexico’s Ports Authority.

What Can and Cannot Be Brought Into Mexico

Mexico has strict import regulations. Here’s what you need to know:

Permitted Items

  • Personal items, cameras, one laptop, clothing, and up to three liters of alcohol.

Restricted Items

  • Fresh food, certain seeds/plants, unapproved medications, and large amounts of undeclared cash.
